IHB #011: How-To Use Filezilla for FTP (Upload/Download Files)

by QueenGeek on April 28, 2009

You may ask yourself “What is FTP” and why do I need it?  FTP means File Transfer Protocol and without getting into all the techno-geek, speak, FTP is used to upload or put files from your computer to a remote (web) site or download or copy files from the remote site to your computer.  As an example, when you purchase music from iTunes, Amazon or another service, FTP is in the background running to transfer or download it to your computer. When you put or upload photos or videos to Youtube, Picasa or Flickr, FTP is in the background transferring these files from your computer to the respective sites.

Why do I need FTP?

If you are using a service such as Google’s Blogger or WordPress.com, you may not need an FTP program as these blogging platforms have built in mechanisms for uploading and downloading files between your computer and their site.  However, those of us that have hosted blogs such as WordPress, will use an FTP program to upload themes and plugins to change the look and feel of our blog.

Using FileZilla

FileZilla is a free FTP client program that supports Windows desktops, Mac Computers and Linux.  FileZilla supports drag-and-drop and bookmarking with an easy-to-use interface.  Watch the video and enjoy!!
